Finally verizon gets the iPhone. It’s been fun using phones that are “non-smart,” but it was time… The Droid Legendary has surved its purpose beyond all expectations and it will be greatly missed. Because of its service it has made the iPhone even that much better.
A small note about the purchase. I found it interesting that the verizon man breaks the box open and activates the phone for you. So you receive a handshake and smile, cell phone in one hand empty box in the other. I understand why this is the way it is, but I almost missed the excitement of opening a package yourself. Maybe the technology could be wireless transmitted to the phone inside the box and all the technical transfers made, without even breaking a seal. Therefore the user would still have that purchase experience and the wow, a iPhone!
Finally ate some seafood here in New England. On saturday I went with Tara in the north end to a place called the Daily Catch. It was amazing! I’ve been a bit hesitant of yelp in the past, but it helped me find this place and it obviously has good reason for being ranked #2 for clam chowder. It was incredible small, one of those where the kitchen is part of the dining area and customers share tables. We had to wait a bit for a table to open up and while waiting one of the shelves in the only fridge broke, sending marina sauce all over the chef! Luckily, they had backup food and enough for us. After scanning the menue which is located on the wall (i love menues on the wall, its so much easier to look at than something printed, and gives this sense of freshness as items can be changed daily) we ordered clam chowder, little necks and calamari meat balls. The calamari meat balls were much more seafood’y than expected, but had a really interesting flavor, something I’ve never had before. The clam chowder was fantastic. It was super creamy and loaded with potatoes and clams. We had no clue what the little necks were, but they came steamed in shells with a garlic filled broth. Mmm mm, all in all this place is a must if your on a boston visit. Had a great time with Tara and hopefully we will be able to make some more adventures soon!
6-1 Red Wings! Managed to scalp a ticket Friday night to the wings game. Turned out to be pretty fantastic, with the wings taking out there frustration from the previous 3 games on the Bruins. I bought an $83 ticket for $60 on the street right before the game started. Managed to sneak into the lower bowl and sit about 10 rows up in an unoccupied seat. Bruins fans were getting pretty rowdy with some of them getting very verbal about me standing up. Ha, scoreboard!
Cannoli Taste Test
Working in the north end, its become a tradition to have a cannoli every friday. In doing so, I started to rank my favorite north end bakeries. Before fridays events, I would have said Marias was my favorite, followed closely by Mikes and then Modern taking third… Little did I know what a blind taste test would do… I ended up choosing Modern hands down because of the tast of the filling. It was start to finish the sweetest, most wonderful, stomach inspiring ricotta whip I’ve had. Maria’s ended up coming in third, but it was do to a soggy shell. The flavor was there, but the aftertaste was much cheesier. In a desert like a cannoli, I’m looking for that full sugar impact. And mikes, it got lost in the mix. It was solid all around, but nothing really stood out about it. I guess thats why they offer so many specialty varieties.
The requirements of the taste test was making the cannolis standard across the board (ricotta filling, plain pastry, powdered sugar). Everyone in the office participated and nine large cannolis were consumed! Heres the start of the documentation, more in depth results to follow.
This Sunday I was able to get the camera out and do some more exploring. Went to the MFA and was pretty impressed. The new “american wing” had more to it than I expected. The old 1800 paintings were gigantic and it was nice to see a room dedicated to design. The one that did upset me about the museum was the 18 bones admission. Seriously? That might be more than the louve… Definitely one of the most expensive art museums i’ve been in, and you could definitely tell my the patrons visiting, it was a very elderly upper class crowd. It really is too bad that art is put into such an elite category, because there were some beautiful things that everyone should be able to see. It was sponsored by Bank of America, and if you had a card then you got in for free. Isnt it great I just recently canceled my account and took the card out of my wallet. I hate having crap in my wallet, but I guess it would have paid off pretty significantly had i kept it.
So I was going through my old photos from europe and came across this collection from a day spent in Essen. The photos that really struck me were the ones I took on the trains and public transportation. Its amazing how much nicer, more organized, and efficient there system is compared to ours. Yes they have more dollars and people riding them, but its simple things like graphics illustrating buildings on the map explaining the maps. I also really like the digital screen on every bus saying what stop your at including the four after that. It was sooo much easier understanding how to get around, which is amazing considering it was all in german. Boston really needs to take some hints from the german example. The green line is old, but it needs to be improved in the simplest ways.
pistachio cannoli from mikes = friday’s lunch!
